When Speed is Paramount

Airless Paint Sprayers

The Airless Paint Sprayer can be driven in several ways:

  • Electric motor
  • Hydraulic Motor
  • Pneumatic Motor
  • Petrol Motor

What is an Airless Paint Pump?

A clue is in the name “Airless”, this is a pump that sucks up paint via a pump and pressurizes it into a paint hose, it is then projected out through a spray gun under great pressure. It is the pressure (up to 3000 psi) that does the atomizing through a special hard wearing tip. Thus the operation is “airless”. Because it uses only pressurized paint, you can apply more paint and faster than any conventional system. Delivering a full even coat first time.

How Does It Work

The pump is drive by one of the means shown above, this driven movement goes into a gearbox that is attached to an eccentric cam. The cam moves the pumps piston up and down. Inside the pump are two balls and seats, as the pump draws in one direction it creates suction that draws paint into the pump. The second ball allows paint to pass into the hose but prevents it from returning. Through this pull and push movement paint is forced in to the hose where it builds pressure.

At the end of the hose is a gun and attached to the gun is a tip or nozzle. When sufficient pressure of paint is available, the trigger of the gun can be pulled and the pressurized paint will be ejected through the gun and out through the nozzle. The Nozzle is machined so as to force the paint to atomize as it passes through.

The tips or nozzles are available in a range of hole sizes and shapes, these determine the width of the spray pattern and how much paint comes out. If a heavy paint is being used then a large tip is needed, likewise, if a thin paint is being used then a small tip is needed.
